1. At the Newport Beach City Council Meeting on 8/11/09 the council voted 5-0 (2 members were absent) in the affirmative for funding $169,222 for the Schematic Design and Design Development phases for the EOC in the new City Hall.  The final approval for the construction phase of the Civic Center aka City Hall will be in November.

2. At the invitation of Orange County RACES, we have applied for available UASI funds and submitted an equipment list for mobile radios, antennas/30' masts/tripods, batteries and heavy duty cases.  This equipment would be used for field deployment, especially for use for field activation and/or a "back-up" EOC.

3. David Brandmeyer, CERT Comm. team member and council President of the Newport Harbor Lutheran Church reported that the Church council has approved the installation of a ham radio repeater system in their new 65' Clock Tower on Dover. The repeater site will be available for use for emergency communications by community groups such as Newport Beach RACES and CERT Comm. The church council also voted to pay for the cost of 2 commercial grade antennas, feed line and installation of these items.  Initially, temporary portable radio equipment will be used on an as needed basis.  A request for approval of the 2 antennas on top of the Clock Tower has been submitted to the building department.

4. Starting either in the 4th quarter of this year or on January 2010, CERT Comm. members will conduct their own Roll Call during the weekly Monday night RACES Net.

5. Instead of our regularly scheduled September meeting on Wednesday 9/9, we will hold a skills workshop on 9/26/09 at Fire Station 7(tentative location) between 9am and 1pm.

Please RSVP via return e-mail if you plan to attend..

6. The October 14th RACES & CERT Comm. meeting will be a tour of the Orange County EOC and Communications Center at Loma Ridge, 2644 Santiago Canyon Road.  I have attached a pdf of a map for the EOC.

Please park in the lower parking lot and enter the main door (EOC) on the north side of the building (walk around to the right side, as you approach the east side of the building from the parking lot).

We will meet at that location at 7 pm.  Please RSVP via return e-mail if you plan to attend.

I suggest we plan on car pooling to the EOC.

7. The November 11th meeting will a tour of the Huntington Beach EOC at 7 pm.  More specific information as to where to meet will be distributed in the future.  Again, carpooling would be a good idea.
Please RSVP via return e-mail if you plan to attend.

Disaster Preparedness Expo

Saturday, September 12, 2009

The City of Newport Beach Fire Department will host the 1st Annual Disaster Preparedness Expo on Saturday, September 12th from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM at Newport Beach Central library.  The event is open to all Newport Beach residents.  At the expo, residents will learn how to build a disaster supply kit, create a family emergency plan, and how to organize their neighborhoods.  The expo is for all ages.

Volunteers needed:  Newport Beach CERT volunteers are needed to help with marketing, organizing, set-up and clean-up for the event.  There are two CERT volunteer shifts for the day of the event: 7:45 AM-2:00 PM and 9:30 AM-3:00 PM and volunteers are needed for both shifts.  If shift times do not work, CERT volunteers can specify the times they are available.  All CERT volunteers that would like to assist at the expo are encouraged to call (949) 644-3112 or e-mail nbcert@nbfd.net.

We got our EOC?

Thank you all for your support in getting our new EOC in the new city hall plains

This is a note from Gary Standard K6GSX

I wanted to let you know that an EOC is in the current planning for the Newport Beach Civic Center.

In a recent Newsletter dated 6/30/09 from our City Manager, Homer Bludau wrote

"A group of citizens approached the Council this spring and expressed an interest in seeing space dedicated to an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at the Civic Center. An EOC provides the space, communications and resources needed for City staff to coordinate our response to large-scale emergency situations, such as earthquakes. Our current EOC is in the Police Headquarters, but it does not provide suffi cient space to accommodate the full team of employees and community volunteers who are expected to report to work during emergencies. Nor is it a place where the space is dedicated to an EOC, with all equipment set up 24/7 and ready to use. After hearing from our citizens and public safety personnel, the Council agreed to include planning for the EOC in the new Civic Center.

Thanks to you and the great people at the Newport Beach Fire Department
Thank you all
