Emergency Alert System (EAS) Drill-Wednesday, November 9 at 11:00 a.m.
Emergency Alert System (EAS) Test Set on November 9
At 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 9, people across the state will hear those familiar tones or see that test message across their screens saying "this is a test." The difference this time is that this test is happening across the nation, all at the same time.
It will be a first-ever nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) giving federal, state and local officials the opportunity to make sure vital life-safety information can be communicated from the nation's capital to the public via broadcasters and cable operators.
Quick Facts about this Nationwide Test
- Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 11 a.m. (PST)
- You will hear the familiar EAS tone, a voice say "this is a test," and potentially see a message on your television or radio
- It will last less than 30 seconds
- No action is needed or required on the part of the public
While the public does not need to take any action during the test, Californians are encouraged to take this opportunity to review and update their emergency plans and replenish their emergency supplies. They may also wish to use the test as a chance to test their own emergency plans.
The nationwide EAS test is being coordinated by the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Communications Commission, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service (NWS). For more information, please visit http://www.fema.gov/emergency/ipaws/eas_info.shtm

Alert OC Mass Notification Test Call- Thursday, October 20th starting at 5:00 p.m.
City of Newport Beach residents will receive an annual test call message from AlertOC, a county-wide emergency notification system, on Thursday, October 20th starting at 5:00 p.m. The AlertOC system gives city officials the ability to communicate with residents and businesses about time-sensitive, emergency or public safety matters.
The test call is intended to remind the community about the system and also to test internal activation procedures. All listed primary residential phones in Newport Beach are automatically included in the system and will receive a phone message that will last less than 60 seconds. All primary business lines are also included in the system but will not receive the test call this year.
If a residence with a listed "land line" does not receive the test call, the resident should visit the city's web-site at www.newportbeachca and click on the "Disaster Preparedness" button to enter their contact information into the secure database or click here.
In addition, community members can choose to add up to three phone numbers and two e-mail addresses to the database and receive emergency information via text messages to cell phones, PDAs, and e-mail accounts. They can also opt to have information delivered through special receiving devices (TTY/TDD) for the hearing impaired.
Residents with call-blocking services can also receive the city's AlertOC calls by adding 949-644-3620 to their approved number list.
For more information about the Alert OC mass notifcation test call on Thursday, October 20th starting at 5:00 pm or about the system in general, e-mail nbcert@nbfd.net or call (949) 644-3112.

Support Relief Efforts for Haiti
Posted Date: 1/14/2010 2:30 PM
Earthquake in Haiti A major 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the
Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince on January 12, causing major
casualties and damage. The quake was followed by several aftershocks
with magnitudes over 5.0.
Many nations are already coming to the aid of Haiti, with humanitarian
efforts underway to assist the Haitian people with food, water,
temporary shelter, medical services, and more. However, as with any
major disaster, governments are not able to provide 100 percent of what
is needed. In a statement issued today by the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security, Secretary Janet Napolitano described U.S. assistance
en route to Haiti, also stating, "I encourage the American people to
donate what funds they can afford to disaster relief organizations such
as the American Red Cross to allow these voluntary groups to provide
goods and services to disaster survivors as quickly as possible."
Donate to the relief fund The best way our community can help the victims of
the Haiti Earthquake is to make a financial donation to the American
Red Cross
Online at www.redcross.org
By calling 1-800-REDCROSS
By mail 202 W. Rialto Ave. San Bernardino, CA 92408
By texting the word Haiti to 90999 and a $10 donation will be added
to the donors monthly cell phone bill. Get Trained for Earthquakes and Disasters This recent earthquake illustrates the importance
of being prepared for earthquakes and all types of disasters. The
Newport Beach Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team, or
CERT, Program is designed to prepare citizens in the event of a
catastrophic disaster. This unique program is offered to all Newport
Beach residents free-of-charge. If you are interested in the CERT
program, call 949-644-3112 or click here.
Second Annual State of CERT Mark Your Calendar
The second annual State of CERT event is scheduled for Friday, January 22, 2010, the
invitation is attached. Invitations will be mailed to all
Newport Beach CERT
volunteers (and RACES) on Monday, January 4, 2010. Attached
is also a letter that I drafted to send to Newport Beach businesses
that will get sent out this week. The State of CERT will serve as the annual
fundraiser for the CERT
program. Please review the attached invitation and letter and
forward to any business or group that you think would be interested in
donating to the Newport Beach CERT
program. At the event this year, I am hoping to have
opportunity drawings of the donated items. As is always the
case, cash donations in the form of a check are always
appreciated. If you know of any business or community group
that would be interested in donating to the CERT
program please forward this letter onto them. We are looking
for event sponsors to sponsor a table or the entire event as
well. The event is primarily for the CERT
volunteers but if businesses (or sponsors) would like to attend they
are welcome. All donors and sponsors will be recognized for
their donation in the event guide. If you have any additional
ideas on how to raise funds for this event, I am always open to
suggestions. I really appreciate all your help and am looking
forward to a great event. Let me know what you all
think.
Thanks, Matt Brisbois
